directors statement
“The Confession” is a short film about crime, punishment, and absolution. The film deals with difficult moral questions and the tensions between evil and good etc. This is something I hoped to enhance in the visual style. Together with my director of photography, we aimed to create lighting that sets the atmosphere and guides the audience through the story. We decided to shoot the film in colour but to keep the colour palette monochrome and enhance the grey shade areas within the locations as well as the symbolic ones within the characters’ souls. From the beginning, I imagined the film as slow-paced, emotionally distanced, and minimalistic. I was primarily interested in portraying a moral dilemma in a way that is not too didactic rather than creating a thrilling story filled with plot twists or characters with unnecessarily developed backgrounds.
