DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Scream for Ice has two main elements that form the basis of the film in terms of content and the genre: The traditional Japanese art of poetry, Haiku, and the nature-human conflict.
With Scream for Ice, which is a result of my academic studies for the last three years as well as my Proficiency in Art thesis, I aim to define a new narrative form and film genre at the intersection of cinema and poetry. Andrei Tarkovsky's approach to cinema as a poet and his effective use of poetry elements in his films inspired me however, I was mainly influenced by the Haiku while designing the narrative style of the film.
In this context, while I was designing Scream for Ice by transforming the rules, limitations, and features of Haiku poetry form into a film genre, I evaluated the tools used to create a narrative in cinema under individual titles like director's approach, content, and subject, structure, and fiction, character, place, time, the use of dialogue, camera, light and color, sound and music. With this method, I tried to define and clarify the narrative form as much as possible and as the director of the film, I tried to make sure each frame and the content of that frame serve the film.
Scream for Ice is an experimental work that converts the rules, limitations, and features of Haiku poetry form into narrative form and film genre in theory. I hope that the Haiku narrative form and film genre will attract the attention of poet directors from different cultures who want to make poetry in cinema, and they will continue to develop this genre by producing Haiku films.
